Texas Hold 'em Poker: The Game Basics

Among the many variants of poker, Texas Hold'em Poker is perhaps the most widely known and played. Texas Hold 'em Poker is categorized as a community or shared poker. Shared poker variants are characterized by their use of community cards to combine with each player's individual cards in creating one's winning poker hand. Texas Hold 'em Poker hands must consist of 2 hole cards plus 3 shared or community cards.

At full seat, a Texas Hold'em Poker table can accommodate as many as 9 or ten players. The players will take turn as the dealer or button. The first dealer is the player who holds highest card after a single card has been distributed to every player.

Prior to dealing, forced bets known as big blind and small blind are made. The small blind always amounts to 50% of the big blind.

The dealer then distributes two face-down cards to each player. After which, the players make betting decisions based entirely on their two hands. Players can check or stay in the game without betting. Otherwise, the player can call, raise, or fold. To call, the first player places an amount equal to the amount of the big blind. To raise, the player has to provide an amount more than the previous player's bet. To fold, the player surrenders one's hand and drops out of the game.

In Texas Hold'em Poker, some cards are burnt and some cards are used as community cards. Each game uses five community cards. Community cards refer to cards that can be used by any betting player on the table, while burnt cards are cards that will not be used in the game.

Community cards are dealt out piecemeal. The first set of community cards consists of three cards. The last two cards are dealt in singles. Each dealing of community cards is alternated by a round of betting such that, in Texas Hold 'em Poker, there is a total of 4 rounds of betting.

To burn, the dealer lays down cards on one side of the table. After which, the dealer lays down the three community cards on the table, face-down. The cards are then turned face up all at the same time. This is known in the poker parlance as the Flop. A round of betting takes place after The Flop.

The dealer lays down the table the fourth community card known as the Turn. The Turn is followed by a rotation of betting.

The last round of betting is known as the River, which takes place after the last community card is drawn out.

If more than one hand has not dropped out of the game, a showdown takes place. The best hand is given the community pot.

In a nutshell, the most played and widely popular variant of poker, Texas Hold 'em Poker is played with small blind, big blind, and community cards. To win, a player must make use three of the five community cards in addition to one's two hole cards.
